This month Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching focuses on the value of "Secondary Foods"

As an Integrative Health Coach, I believe nutrition encompasses more than just food and nutrients. The Secondary Food Method considers all aspects of nourishment and their impact on well-being.  It explores how the food we eat daily provides unique, bio-individual nourishment, supporting multidimensional well-being. This method inspires curiosity about your food preferences and what works best for you.

Secondary food choices are influenced by:

  1. Health: Specific conditions, allergies, or preventive measures.

  1. Lifestyle: Stress, busy schedules and activity levels

  1. Food Choices:

Physical hunger cues, sensory appeal,

and emotional connections.

  1. Background: Childhood

    experiences and financial

    considerations.

This method emphasizes:

  1. Nourishment from primary and secondary food:

We view health holistically, including relationships, physical activity, career, spirituality, and the food on your plate.

2. Diet as a holistic lifestyle:

We approach diet as a healthy, sustainable lifestyle that nourishes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, not a fad.

  1. Bio-individuality of nutrition:

We recognize that nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. We encourage you to trust your body and find foods that work best for your unique needs.

4. A Healthy food relationship: We encourage exploring your thoughts and beliefs about food, reframing unhelpful ideas, moving away from food morality, and listening to your body's intuition. This makes mealtime a pleasurable act of self-care.

5. Crowding out: Focus on adding more nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, and water, which naturally reduces processed foods, sugar, and caffeine.

6. Back to Basics: When overwhelmed, return to brightly colored fruits and vegetables, whole grains, quality proteins, herbs, spices, and healthy fats. Some follow the 80/20 rule: 80% whole, nutrient-dense foods and 20% for other nourishing choices.
